The workshop will take place at Dobra 72 (Collegium Artes Liberales) in the conference room on level -1. It will be conducted by Prof. Peter K. Austin, Marit Rausing Chair in Field Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. His main resinterests are theory and practice of endangered languages documentation and revitalisation, Lexical Functional Grammar, morpho-syntactic typology, computer-aided lexicography and multi-media for endangered languages. He has also published on historical and comparative linguistics, typology, and Australian Aboriginal history and biography. He has extensive fieldwork experience on Australian Aboriginal languages and Sasak and Samawa from Eastern Indonesia.

2016-10-03 The Field School in Wilamowice
September 18–28 staff and students from the from the University of Warsaw faculty of “Artes Liberales”, Leiden University, and School of Oriental and African Studies in London, along with minority language activists from Poland and the UK participated in the EngHum Field School in Wilamowice. Participants took part in structured workshops on audio and video recording, software tools for data processing, and perspectives on cultural-linguistic research and revitalization methodology.

All participants also gave presentations about their research and/or motivations for their involvement in the school (see the program here). Perhaps most importantly, all participants joined one of four groups, each of which was assigned a different task related to research and revitalization of minority languages and cultures. The four groups were:

– Museum in Wilamowice

This group was tasked with collaborating with community members in Wilamowice who are working toward the establishment of a local museum. Such a museum would provide space for the expresion of the unique cultural heritage of Wilamowice and the surrounding communities, as well as a safe environment for the storage and exibition of valuable local artifacts.

– School group

This group worked together with the local school in Wilamowice to develop didactic materials to improve methodologies for teaching minority languages. The group produced a number of integrated strategies for language teaching, including games, graphic materials, and ideas for various Apps that could be used for language learning.

– Surrounding villages group

This group surveyed the villages surrounding Wilamowice regarding the history of the area, attitudes towar Wymysorys and Wilamowian culture, and the relations between these villages and Wilamowice.

– Hałcnów

Much of the program took place at the hotel „Przystań nad Sołą“ in Bielany, just outside Wilamowice, where participants also stayed, ate together, and socialized. Two important events took place in the town of Wilamowice. On Suday evening, the participants of the field school presented themselves and their groupwork to local community members and were treated to Wilamovian music and dancing, as well as the primiere of „Óf Yer Wełt“, a play in Wymysorys performed by the local theater group. On the final day of the field school, participants had the opportunity to meet and discuss the status of Wymysorys with memebrs of the Commision of National and Ethnic Minorities, a body of the Polish Lower Chaimber of Parliament (SEJM).

2016-10-02 Workshop in Nahuatl
On October 6 and 7 of 2016, as part of the ENGHUM project we will carry out a workshop for native speakers of Nahuatl (including writers, students, researchers, teachers and activists) as well as participants from the Faculty of „Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw.

Over thirty native speakers of the language will meet at Mexico's National Archives to read and discuss manuscripts written by their ancestors during the country's colonial period, as well as explore ways to strengthen and develop teaching, research and revitalization activities related to their language and culture. The discussions will be held entirely in Nahuatl, highlighting both the mutual inteligibility of each participant's variant, as well as the capacity of the language to serve as a tool for advanced academic work.

[English version below] Serdecznie zapraszam do udziału w szkole terenowej w Wilamowicach w ramach programu Twinning Komisji Europejskiej („Engaged humanities”), która odbędzie się w dniach 18-28 września 2016.

Szkoła obejmuje praktyki terenowe z zakresu etnolingwistyki, serię szkoleń, wykładów i warsztatów związanych z szeroko pojętą tematyką rewitalizacji językowo-kulturowej, tworzenia dokumentacji językowej, działań na rzecz zachowania lokalnego dziedzictwa, językowych praw mniejszości, ideologii językowych, metodologii badań etnolingwistycznych i socjolingwistycznych. Wezmą w niej udział eksperci polscy i zagraniczni (SOAS/University of London, Universiteit Leiden), przedstawiciele mniejszosci językowych z Polski ( przedstawiciele Kaszubów i Łemków) i świata ( aktywiści z Isle of Man, Guernsey, Meksyku), pracownicy i doktoranci naszego wydziału oraz z instytucji biorących udział w projekcie (SOAS, Un. Leiden).

I am pleased to invite you to field school in Wilamowice which is taking place beetween 18th and 28th of September. It is organised as a part of the Twinning project "Engaged Humanities". 

During the field school there will be groups of ethnolinguistics field work, series of seminars, lectures, workshops widely connected with language and cultural revitalization, creating lingustic documentation, activites targeted on preserving local heritage, language rights of minorities, constructing a positive language ideology, methodology of ethnolinguuistic and sociolinguistic research. Taking part in the school will be experts from Poland, as well as Great Britain (SOAS - University of London) and the Netherlands (Univeristeit of Leiden), representatives of language minorities (Kashubian and Lemko), activists from Isle of Man, Guernsey, Mexico, researchers and doctoral students of Faculty of "Artes Liberales" (University of Warsaw) and institutions which are taking part in EngHum project: SOAS, Universiteit of Leiden.  

To participate please apply by the 15th of August on (applications will be handled on a first-come, first-service basis!). Costs of participation (accommodation, alimentation and travel arrangements) are covered by the organizer.

2016-07-15 Report from Summer School at SOAS in London
June 14-21 staff and students from the University of Warsaw faculty of Artes Liberales participated in the EngHum summer school at Londons School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS): Transdisciplinarity in Language Documentation and Revitalisation, working across disciplines on issues of language and identity, language vitality, language maintenance and revitalisation.

Led by Professor Peter Austin and Dr. Julia Sallabank, the summer school offered several current perspectives on documentation and research in multilingual settings based on ongoing the work of prominent London-based and Warsaw-based research teams. Insights into data processing software packages and archiving were provided. Participants learned techniques for producing quality audio/video materials and were given the opportunity to put their knowledge to practice using modern recording equipment. Here are some details about the content of the program (in alphabetical order by presenter):

Peter Austin conducted several sessions relating to practical issues of data collection, software and workflow, language documentation, revitalization, and data archiving. Tom Castle acquainted participants with scientific standards in terms of producing high quality audio/video documentation. Participants of the school were provided a/v equipment and assigned several practical tasks of making quality recordings in different environments. Gregory Haimovich made a presentation about problems of the lexical modernization of Southern Quechua, the most widely spoken Amerindian language. He demonstrated by examples, what failures usually occur at each stage of the modernization process, and discussed what strategies could help to overcome these failures in current sociolinguistic situation. Tymoteusz Król, Justyna Majerska and Justyna Olko discussed current strategy, challenges and success in documenting the Wymysorys language (Germanic) in Wilamowice, Souther Poland. Friederike Lüpke presented the highly multilingual situation found in Casamance (Southern Senegal) and the current state of research conducted there by the Crossroads Project. Dina Mehmedbegovic discussed the current state of multilingualism among school children across the United Kingdom. Jennifer Needs presented the case of language revitalization of the Welsh language (Celtic) in Wales. Justyna Olko, John Sullivan and Abelardo de la Cruz covered the state of the art in efforts to revitalize the Nahuatl language (Uto Aztecan) in Mexico. Julia Sallabank focused her attention on language revitalization in terms of new speakers of endangered languages, researching languages attitudes, speaker identities, and language policy. Candide Simard and colleagues presented their work with the Sylheti language (Eastern Indo-Aryan, Bangladesh) community in London. Participants of the school had the opportunity to learn Sylheti basics from a native teacher of the language and practiced collecting language data from Sylheti speakers from the community.  Birgul Yilmaz discussed her research into Kurdish language and identity.

In addition to the presenters, the participants of the school consistently engaged the group in discussions with varying perspectives from their different areas of study and academic backgrounds. In the afternoons, the participants were afforded the opportunity to utilize SOAS library and lab equipment and many made fruitful use of these resources. 

There was also a rich social program surrounding the summer school. On Friday afternoon, participants had a break from lectures and were treated to the award winning documentary film Kanraxel: the Confluence of Agnack, which covers the multilingual setting in Casamance as villagers prepare for a large celebration. On Saturday, there was a walking tour with a Sylheti guide. We started in Altab Ali Park, which, as out guide explained, is symbol of resistance against racism and is associated with the struggle for human rights in defense of British Bangladeshis. Then we went along Brick Lane, main street of Bangladeshi community area. After the tour, we had a delicious curry lunch in a local Bangladeshi restaurant. In addition, several late afternoon drinks were organized. Participants also had the evenings to socialize with each other and explore the Londons tourist attractions, shopping, pubs, restaurants, parks and more .

All in all, the EngHum summer school was a lovely experience and the exchange of knowledge and ideas was rewarding for all involved.

On Monday 13th June Summer School “Transdisciplinarity in Language Documentation and Revitalisation” in School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London is starting. The key speakers are: Julia Sallabank, Peter Austin, Jenny Needs, Justyna Olko, John J. Sullivan, Tom Castle, Abelardo de la Cruz, Birgul Yilmaz, Candide Simard, Dina Mehmedbegovic, Friederike Luepke (and Crossroads Project team), Justyna Majewska, Tymoteusz Król.

2016-06-06 „Hobbit. Hejn ȧn cyryk”
"On Friday 26th February 2016 in Teatr Polski theater play in Wymysiöeryś „Hobbit. Hejn ȧn cyryk” was performed. The event was organised by Faculty of ""Artes Liberales"", youth from Wilamowice and Wilamowianie Association. Spectators of the performance were welcomed in Wymysiöeryś by the Rector of the University of Warsaw prof. Marcin Pałys. Then dr hab. Justyna Olko, local language activist and teacher Tymoteusz Król and theatre director Andrzej Seweryn delivered their speeches. The folk ensemble “Wilamowianie” presented dances from Wilamowice. “Hobbit. Hejn ȧn cyryk “ performance based upon the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien was part of celebrations of International Mother Language day. Scenography, costumes, script, music and young actor playing was marvelous. After performance there were two workshops for children: one concerning traditional dance and the second about costume and language of Wilamowice. "

On 23th ant 24th of May at the Faculty of Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw our second training session “Teaching minority languages, methodology and curriculum development. Practical applications, understanding societal and cultural challenges” was organised.

2016-03-07 Training session “Capacity ­building in methodology and theory of transdisciplinary research on cultural and linguistic heritage”
On 7th and 8th March at the Faculty of Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw our first training session “Capacity ­building in methodology and theory of transdisciplinary research on cultural and linguistic heritage” took place. Lectures had been delivered by: Konrad Rybka (University of Amsterdam), Julia Sallabank, (SOAS, University of London) Maarten Jensen & Omar Anguilar Sánchez (University of Leiden) and Nicole Dołowy-­Rybińska (Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of Slavic Studies).


2016-01-10 EngHum project has started
We have the pleasure of announcing that our EngHum project has started. It will last until the end of 2018 r. ENGHUM project will help to implement an innovative scientific strategy and will contribute to capacity building of the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw. Project is realised in close cooperation with two partner institutions: the Department of Linguistics at SOAS, University of London and Leiden University’s Centre for Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Archaeological Heritage within the Faculty of Archaeology.
